"New Novell" a Positive Development for Utah, Says Vice President Kent Erickson

OREM, UTAH - May 25, 2006 - "There's a new level of passion in Novell's Utah offices these days," Vice President Kent Erickson says. Erickson discussed Novell's present and future position in a presentation to Utah executives at the Utah Technology Council (UTC) meeting at the Canyon Park Technology Center in Orem today.

Erickson noted that while Novell has publicly committed to supporting its NetWare operating system through at least 2015, the company is working aggressively to support the steady migration to Linux and open source software among its growing customer base.

"Our customers are recognizing the dramatically lower costs, greater choice and enhanced flexibility they can achieve with Linux," Erickson said. "We recognize these advantages and are actually helping to drive this future adoption."

"We're now providing identity management and security at a level no company can match," he continued. "We're working to help our customers - both global enterprise customers as well as smaller organizations - to benefit from our advanced networking services on both Linux and NetWare platforms. As customers migrate, we're there to help them - but we are committed to helping them make that move at their own pace, in every case."

As a founding anchor in Utah's technology industry since the early 1980s, Novell has grown to become far more than NetWare. The company now has 4,800 employees worldwide and most recently reported $1.198 billion in annual revenue. Currently, roughly two-thirds of revenue is software license and maintenance, with one-third from IT services. According to revenue breakdowns, customers are migrating from NetWare to Novell Open Enterprise Server, reflecting the success of Novell's open enterprise strategy.

"Our continued focus on security, identity management and open source is driving the right solutions for our customers," Erickson said.

Erickson also noted that Utah continues to be a critical foundation for the company. As Novell completes its recent restructuring work, the company looks forward to adding new Utah hires to its workforce, he said.

Utah's Mountain America Federal Credit Union (MAFCU) was the sponsor of the breakfast event. MAFCU Senior Vice President and UTC Trustee Brent Lawrence noted that MACU is proud to be Novell's original and current credit union partner. MACU is strongly focused on Utah's technology industry and has established a branch office within Novell's Utah headquarters to support Novell's Utah employees.
