SALT LAKE CITY, Utah – August 11, 2005 – The Utah Information Technology Association (UITA) today announced its inductees to the Seventh Annual “Hall of Fame.” UITA will honor two Utah technology leaders whose innovations have made significant global advancements to the technology industry: Drew Major and Dr. Homer R. Warner, in a celebration that will be held Friday, December 2, 2005 in the Grand Ballroom of the Downtown Marriott, 75 South West Temple.

The event’s keynote speaker will be Mark Hurd, recently appointed president and chief executive officer of HP. Previously, Hurd spent 25 years at NCR Corp., culminating in his two-year tenure as chief executive officer and president. His leadership was marked by successful efforts to improve operating efficiency, bolster the position of NCR’s product line and build a strong leadership team.

The “Hall of Fame” is the premier recognition event for the Utah IT industry. UITA honors individuals with Utah ties who have made a significant contribution to the IT industry either through technology, innovation and/or business. Their groundbreaking contributions have created jobs, commercialized technology, improved productivity and stimulated the nation’s growth and development.

UITA will recognize and acknowledge the achievements of Drew Major, a founder of Novell and the lead architect and developer of Novell’s NetWare operating system, and Dr. Homer R. Warner, M.D., PhD, a pioneer in the field of Medical Informatics.

This year’s inductees will be joining prior “Hall of Fame” inductees such as Kevin Rollins, Shane Robison, Alan Kay, James Clark, Nolan Bushnell, David Bailey, Thomas Stockham, Jr., David Spafford, Spencer Kirk, Edwin Catmull, Stephen Aldous, John Warnock, Bruce Bastian, Ivan Sutherland, Ray Noorda, Philo Farnsworth, David Evans, and Alan Ashton.

Drew Major and his partners Kyle Powell, Dale Neibaur and Mark Hurst envisioned the value of local area networking (LAN) in 1981. By 1991, their NetWare operating system had become the “killer application” that was driving a $40 billion dollar market for network and server hardware, PCs, consulting and other value-added services. In 1995, BYTE magazine named Drew Major one of the 20 Most Influential People for the previous 20 years of the computer industry. He was inducted into the National Computer Industry Hall of Fame in 1999.

A Morris Collen award recipient, Dr. Homer R. Warner, has pioneered many aspects of computer applications to medicine. He was the first chair of the Department of Medical Informatics at the University of Utah, the first medical school in the U.S. to formally organize a degree in medical informatics. Author of Knowledge Engineering in Health Informatics, he also served as CIO for the U’s Health Sciences Center, as president of the American College of Medical Informatics (where an award has been created in his honor), and was actively involved with the National Institutes of Health.

“It is a privilege to highlight these new inductees for their impressive impact on technology and their outstanding leadership,” said Richard R. Nelson, president and chief executive officer of UITA. “This year’s inductees to the UITA ‘Hall of Fame’ continue to exemplify the many ways Utah’s high-tech community produces innovators who are changing our world.”

UITA’s Seventh Annual “Hall of Fame” will begin at 6:00 p.m. on Friday, December 2, 2005 in the Grand Ballroom of the Downtown Marriott, 75 South West Temple, with a networking reception. Dinner and awards will begin at 7:00 p.m. The cost of the black-tie event is $175 for UITA members and guests with tables of 10 for $1,750; and $250 for non-UITA members and guests with tables of 10 for $2,250. Proceeds from the dinner will help foster the growth of Utah’s high-tech community. To RSVP for the “Hall of Fame” Celebration, please visit www.uita.org.
