Utah Celebrates the #1 Ranking in the Nation on Digital Learning Day!
Salt Lake City - The 2nd week of the session brings a celebration of National Digital Learning Day and Utah's ranking as #1 in the nation for K-12 Digital Learning! During the 2011 session, PCE in partnership with Senator Howard Stephenson and Representative Brad Daw passed the Statewide Online Education Program. The major paradigm shifts of this student-centric policy earned Utah the highest score on the 2011 Digital Learning Report Card.
Leading the way, the Utah legislature in their desire to provide all students with broader access to high-quality, personalized learning has adopted multiple student-centric policies designed to harness the power of technology. Specifically, through the passage of SB65's Statewide Online Education Program and charter policies enacted over the last decade, digital learning has become available in some form to All Utah students.
Online learning is flexible, personalized and designed to meet the needs of our next generation learners. But it's the personal stories that sum up the advantages of digital learning the best. Shiree and Heidi are a daughter and mother who were more than happy to share how this option is meeting Shiree's individual academic needs. Heidi enthusiastically shared,
"So that's been a big advantage having a child go from saying, I don't like my classes, to, I love this subject. I didn't know I could do this subject. I didn't know I could do that! That's been the really great thing about online."

Utah policymakers have taken the approach that digital learning is an equal and integral part of our public education system. There is still much work to be done to improve the digital learning landscape in Utah in order to provide all K-12 students with access to online options. We can, however, take pride in the fact that our state has set a precedent for the other 50 states by dramatically transitioning Utah's approach to education with 21st century solutions.
